Robert Ira Holley
The South Carolina Fertilizer and Agrichemical Association is proud to honor Robert Ira Holley as the recipient of the SCFAA Lifetime Achievement Award. This distinguished recognition celebrates Ira’s more than four decades of leadership, dedication, and service to the fertilizer and agrichemical industry, while also honoring the relationships, values, and legacy he has built throughout his life.
Born on December 3, 1956, in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Ira’s passion for agriculture was planted at a young age on his family farm in Aiken, South Carolina. Established in 1916 by his maternal grandfather, Ashton Head, the farm became the place where Ira first learned the importance of hard work, responsibility, and caring for the land. As a child, Ira spent many weekends traveling an hour from Orangeburg to Aiken to work and learn on the farm. Those early experiences shaped his character and created the foundation for his lifelong commitment to agriculture.
Ira graduated from Willington Academy in 1974 and continued his education at Clemson University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Mechanization in 1979. His years at Clemson created a lifelong connection to the university and the agricultural community—a connection that remains a special part of his life and one he proudly shares with his family.
Following graduation, Ira began a remarkable 42-year career in the fertilizer and agricultural materials industry. He started with Kaiser Ag Chemical, serving as a Dealer Sales Representative and Retail District Manager from 1980–1986. He continued to build his career with Columbia Nitrogen and Arcadian Corporation before joining Potash Corporation–PCS in 1997, where he served as National Accounts Manager until 2017. Following PCS’s acquisition by Nutrien, Ira continued his leadership as Nutrien’s National Sales Manager for the Eastern Region from 2017–2022 before retiring after more than four decades of dedicated service.
Throughout his career, Ira became known for his extensive industry knowledge, strong work ethic, and commitment to the people he served. He built lasting relationships with customers, colleagues, and industry partners and earned the respect of those around him through his integrity and dedication. His passion for agriculture extended beyond his professional career through his service as Vice President of the South Carolina Plant Food Society in 1986, Vice President of the South Carolina Fertilizer and Agrichemical Association in 1988, and President of the South Carolina Fertilizer and Agrichemical Association in 1989. He also served on numerous boards, including three terms on the Clemson University Fertilizer Advisory Board.
Ira’s connection to agriculture came full circle when he became Managing Partner of Ashton Head Farms in Aiken from 2004–2022. The same farm where he spent his childhood weekends learning the values that would guide his life became a place where he could help preserve and continue the family legacy established by his maternal grandfather, Ashton Head, in 1916. Through this role, Ira honored the past while continuing to support the agricultural traditions that have meant so much to him and his family.
While Ira’s professional accomplishments are many, his greatest pride has always been his family. He married Denise Marie Goode on June 23, 1984, and together they have built a life centered around faith, family, and cherished traditions. They have two daughters, Beth and Lauren, who remain among Ira’s greatest sources of pride. One of his proudest moments was watching both of his daughters graduate from Clemson University, creating a special family bond they share through their Clemson memories and class rings.
Ira’s family has continued to grow with the addition of his sons-in-law, Chris Orman and Chris Davies, and five grandchildren: Burke, Forrest, Timothy, Luke, and Holley. Although Ira has earned many titles throughout his life, his favorite will always be “Pap,” a name lovingly given to him by his grandchildren. He treasures the time he spends
with them, especially teaching them the outdoor traditions he loves most—hunting, fishing, and riding four-wheelers.
Outside of his professional accomplishments and family, Ira enjoys a life filled with the outdoors and the simple pleasures that have always been important to him. He enjoys grilling, frying, riding his tractor, planting deer and turkey food plots, and preparing dove fields. An avid outdoorsman, Ira enjoys all types of fishing, including lake, river, and ocean creek fishing. He especially loves spending time at Edisto Beach, South Carolina, where many treasured family memories have been made.
Ira’s home is shared with three loyal companions: Biscuit, his yellow Labrador, and his “grand dogs,” Calhoun, a white Labrador, and Penny, a black Labrador. Whether he is working on the farm, enjoying the outdoors, teaching his grandchildren the traditions he loves, or simply spending time with those closest to him, Ira continues to live out the values that have defined his life—hard work, family, faith, and stewardship.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, outdoorsman, and agricultural leader, Robert Ira Holley’s impact reaches far beyond his professional accomplishments. His dedication to the fertilizer and agrichemical industry, his commitment to service, and his genuine love for family, friends, and community have left a lasting legacy.
